As part of the ongoing sea defence works at Milton Common, sections of the coastal path will be temporarily closed from Tuesday 14 April while the surface is refreshed.
The existing path is being replaced with Breedon gravel, the same durable surface used along the Eastern Road coastal path. This upgrade will provide a safer, longer‑lasting route and help the path better withstand the coastal environment once reopened.
Work will take place from north to south, with sections reopening progressively as soon as they are ready. The final section is expected to reopen by the end of June, weather permitting.
After the new surface is laid, there will be a short delay before fencing is removed and the path is reopened. This is required to allow the Breedon gravel to cure and harden, which can take up to two weeks and depends on a stretch of good weather. Opening the path too early would leave the surface loose, less durable and more likely to require early maintenance.
Small sections of Breedon gravel works will also take place on the western bund. While most of this route will remain open, some short stretches will be fenced off. Where this happens, users will be able to walk around the works using the existing grassed areas.
