Footbridge update
We’ll cross that bridge…
The temporary overpass at Peronne Road footbridge has now undergone all safety checks and has been fully approved. This means that the footbridge is now reopened to the public. Please take care when using the temporary overpass that we are providing to minimise disruption during our work on the new sea defences.
With Peronne Road footbridge reopened we are now commencing the planned work near the railway bridge and the small footbridge here is now closed for the remainder of the project (until December 2025).
This closure is necessary as this area will be undergoing significant improvement work, including a new viewing spot with seating.
A diversion is in place (please refer to signage near the bridge).
Spring clean underway
Over at one of our previous phases, Phase 3 at Tipner Lake, the first stage of cleaning work has now been completed.
The growth of natural algae on concrete structures like this is common in damper maritime climates like ours. However, we appreciate that it is unsightly for the many visitors to the area.
Working alongside botanical experts we are now removing the algae in an environmentally responsible manner. The next stage of cleaning work will start in April 2025.

It’s National Apprenticeship Week and our contractors Knights Brown are looking forward to welcoming their new apprentice Edward Bolton, who will be starting in September. Ed is currently studying at UTC Portsmouth and will be joining the North Portsea team as a Degree Apprentice in September, this will form part of his Civil Engineering course.

Essential SGN work London Road
Weekend work
SGN have informed us that they will be carrying out essential gas pipe replacement work over this weekend and to do this safely, some additional lane closures will be in place while traffic is quieter. The work will take place from 7pm on Friday to 5am on Monday 14-17 February.
SGN will be working days and nights, which means the lane closures can be removed sooner than planned.
Please be aware of the following changes:
- Hilsea’s dedicated slip lane from the A27/M27 will be closed
- London Road southbound will be reduced to a single lane
- Lane closures will be in place around Portsbridge Roundabout and Northern Road, but at least one lane will remain open
- Some bus stops within the lane closures will be temporarily closed – we recommend checking with your bus provider for updates, especially for the Donaldson Road stop between McDonald’s and Portsbridge Roundabout
