Slipway progress ‘pouring in’
Over the last few weeks, fantastic progress was made near the Portsbridge roundabout car park: the concrete works for the raised slipway are nearly complete! As you can see in the image, the lower section is now fully poured, with just a few pours remaining to finish the upper part.
Our contractor, Knights Brown, and their dedicated team have been making excellent progress, even with the challenges of unpredictable weather and tidal timing. Since the concrete must be poured at low tide and allowed to set before the water returns, careful coordination has been key.
The photo also shows the rock armour near the slipway’s edge, as well as the silt curtain stretching along the creek. This curtain plays a vital role in protecting the surrounding harbours by preventing disturbed silt from drifting into nearby waters during construction.
Rocks, coconut and a splash of wildflowers!
Over by the railway bridge, work is progressing smoothly on the gabions supporting the moat overpass. These sturdy wire cages filled with rock form the foundation of a raised structure that will eventually sit 1.5 to 2 metres higher than before. This elevation is designed to align with the new flood defence levels along Ports Creek.
What’s especially interesting is what’s inside the gabions: a special lining made from coir, a natural fibre derived from coconuts. This eco-friendly material plays a key role in supporting hydroseeding – a technique where a slurry of wildflower seeds, mulch, and fertiliser is sprayed across the surface. The result? A vibrant, colourful sea of wildflowers that will not only look beautiful but also help stabilise the soil and support biodiversity.
Making waves on the Green
We had a fantastic time at the Milton Neighbourhood Forum’s annual Picnic on the Green last weekend! With sunshine overhead and a brilliant community turnout, it was the perfect setting to connect with local residents.
Our stall was buzzing with activity – especially thanks to our popular wave tank, which drew in lots of curious young minds keen to learn about coastal defences and how waves work. It was great to see so many children (and adults!) getting hands-on and asking questions.
Events like this are a great opportunity for us to share updates on the North Portsea Coastal Scheme, hear from the community, and celebrate the green spaces that make Portsmouth special. Thanks to everyone who stopped by – and to the Milton Forum for organising such a great event!

Happy World Saltmarsh Day
Last week, 11 June, marked World Saltmarsh Day – a day to recognise the vital role saltmarshes play in protecting our coastlines, supporting wildlife, and capturing carbon.
As part of the final phase of the North Portsea Coastal Scheme, new saltmarsh habitat is being created at Ports Creek, Hilsea. These rich ecosystems not only boost local biodiversity but also help manage flood risk and improve water quality – making them a key part of a more climate-resilient Portsmouth.
