Rocking the slipway
Work has begun on the slipway near the Portsbridge roundabout car park, where our site offices are located. As part of the project, the slipway will be raised by approximately 200mm, enhancing its resilience and functionality. The images show the rock placed along the edge to the left – on the right you can see so-called ‘shuttering’. These are wooden structures that will be filled with concrete, forming a solid support for the raised slipway’s edge.

Remember when we talked about reusing excavated foreshore material to kickstart the colonisation of marine plants on our new rock revetment? Well, the recycling doesn’t stop there.
Alongside the sludgy (wet) material, some earth (dry) material was displaced when we removed the old defence structures. Known as ‘site-won’ material, this has also been preserved and is now being reused within the new flood defence structure.
This approach isn’t just eco-friendly—it reduces the need for new deliveries while cutting down on waste disposal. A win for the environment and a win for efficiency!
A happy hatch amidst hard work
Even with our major sea defence work progressing along Ports Creek, nature proves its enduring resilience. We’re delighted to report that 7 cygnets have hatched in the moat—an uplifting sight that brings joy to our day.
Our team remains committed to protect the environment during our work and the arrival of these baby swans is a charming reminder that nature finds a way, even with our project in full swing!

Hilsea splash pool re-opens this weekend
Great news for parents – the Hilsea Jubilee splash pool re-opens this weekend (24 May), in time for half-term. Perfect for those aged 8 and under, it boasts two shallow water pools no deeper than five inches, play features, and rubber safety surfacing. Big thanks to Portsmouth City Council’s play, parks and grounds teams for all the hard work they have put in over the past six weeks to get them ready.
