Hydroseeding continues
Over 900 metres of full height embankment have now been hydroseeded, and the results are already visible. The first sections are sprouting with lush green growth, showing how this technique will soon transform the whole stretch into a vibrant landscape.
Over the next few days we will be hydroseeding the flex MSE wall and gabions at the moat crossover near the railway bridge, ensuring the entire area flourishes. This isn’t just about engineering, as the vegetation will actually help stabilise the embankments, but also about creating a healthier, greener environment for all.

Moat improvement work progress
Work to improve the water quality of the moat is progressing rapidly, with the largest section, the middle stretch, now fully dredged. Reeds have been carefully relocated into newly built reedbed areas, helping to reshape the moat and create clearer, healthier water. These efforts are designed to support the many wildlife friends of Foxes Forest, ensuring the area remains a thriving natural habitat. The project also enhances the historic landscape, as the moat forms part of the 18th‑century Hilsea Lines fortifications.
A note for dog walkers: we know Foxes Forest is a favourite spot for dog walking. Please take extra care to keep your furry companions away from the reedbeds for now. We wouldn’t want anyone, human or canine, to get stuck in the reeds and soft ground. While they may look a little dishevelled as they settle in, the plants are establishing themselves into strong new reedbeds and we expect this to be mostly established by spring next year.

The North Portsea Coastal Scheme team is passionate about our local environment and especially the many feathered friends that call our coastline home. From overwintering visitors to year‑round residents, we’re always looking out for them and sharing snapshots when we can.
We’re excited to spread the word about the Bird Aware Solent Photography Competition! Celebrate the natural beauty of the Solent coastline, its wildlife, and its amazing coastal birds by entering this year’s contest.
